Biography: Victor A. Young

 

A native of Two Hills, Alberta, Mr. Young is a graduate of the University of British Columbia (B.A. Psychology, 1970). He was Artist-in-Residence and Assistant Professor of Drama at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon 1978-1980) and the University of Regina (1982-1984). He currently teaches part-time at Sheridan College of Applied Science and Technology (Musical Theatre Program) and also coaches privately. Known primarily for his work in musical theatre, he has also written, directed and produced. Presently based in Toronto, his work has been seen in theatres across Canada, as well as in the United States.

In 2006 Mr. Young created the role of Elrond in the World Premiere of Lord Of The Rings at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre. He also starred as the irrepressible impresario Bela Zangler in the Canadian premiere of Crazy For You at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. His latest credits include William Webster, Head of the CIA, in the mini-series The Company, Alfred Bloomingdale in The Reagans, Mr. Peabody, the owner of the New York Plaza, in the made for T.V. films Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, Andre Sevigny in War Brides - the musical and Lloyd (the Director) in Noises Off for Theatre Aquarius, Hamilton and the Reverend J.D. Blackwell in the Charlottetown Festival (2003) and Theatre Calgary (2004) productions of Fire. He has directed They’re Playing Our Song, Menopositive -the musical and Oh Coward! for Welcome Wood Productions and appeared as the Narrator (Egmont) for the Cleveland Symphony and Calgary Philharmonic/CBC presentations of Beethoven’s Egmont Symphony. He starred as Bruce Delamitri in Popcorn and Mendel in Falsettos for the ATP Spring Repertory. Adept at playing heroes or villains, Mr. Young played both in The Shooting of Dan McGrew, albeit in different productions. He has over 200 stage credits including the Dora Award winning Red Shadow in The Desert Song, Emile DeBecque in South Pacific, the ubiquitous Mr. Tango in A Rose For Mr. Tango (which he co-directed) with tango legend Juan Carlos Copes, opera star Tito Merelli in Lend Me A Tenor, Julian Marsh in 42nd Street, Con Melody in A Touch Of The Poet, Hajj in Kismet, Prospero in The Tempest, and the title roles in Dracula and Sweeney Todd. He was nominated for a Neville Award for his portrayal of Sky Masterson in Neptune Theatre’s Guys and Dolls. He created the role of Uncle Edgar in A Gift To Last, the Uncle in the concert version of Beethoven Lives Upstairs, and with his wife Jayne Lewis, the musical tribute Irving Berlin … Always.

Several seasons at Canada’s Stratford Festival included seven Shakespeares, John Hirsch’s landmark production of The Three Sisters with Maggie Smith, and Fred Graham/Petruchio in Kiss Me Kate opposite his wife as Lilli Vanessi/Kate.

Mr. Young’s other featured or guest starring credits in film and television include Path to 911, Four Brothers, Serendipity, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Bait, Sex and Mrs. X, Dash and Lilli, Family Therapy, Mrs. Winterbourne, Stay Tuned, Escape Clause, Sue Thomas - F.B.
